Haxtun’s Lady Bulldogs added three wins to their now impressive 16-3 season record last week. The local ladies in red took on Bethune and Hi-Plains in triangle action on Saturday and picked up a five-set victory over Weldon Valley on Monday.
Saturday’s action took the Lady Bulldogs south to Siebert to face off with Bethune and Hi-Plains in best-of-three triangle competition. Haxtun met Bethune first, picking up a win in two sets, 25-11 and 25-4, respectively.
Senior Allie Thompson and sophomore Megan Walker led the team at the net with seven kills each. Thompson put down seven of 13 attempts for a .385 hitting percentage. Defensively at the net, Ella Coffin registered two assisted blocks, the team high, followed by Cassidy Goddard and Walker, each with one.
A handful of Lady Bulldogs put up stellar numbers from the service line, including Thompson with three aces. K’lyn Bornhoft and Walker each tallied two aces followed by Taylor Schram and Coffin, each with one. As a team, Haxtun served 91.8 percent against Bethune.
In the back row, Bornhoft, Lady Bulldog libero, registered 11 digs, the team high. Schram tallied seven and Coffin had six. On serve receive, Coffin, Grace Gibson and Bornhoft each had three successful passes. Total the Lady Bulldogs had 13 passes on serve receive throughout the two-set win.
Schram and Thompson combined for a total of 23 assists in the first match of the day against Bethune; Thompson tallied 13 and Schram had 10.
Game two of the day pitted Haxtun against the hosting Hi-Plains Lady Patriots. The Lady Bulldogs took set one 25-15 and a commanding second set, 25-7, for the win.
Schram registered 11 kills in the two-set victory for a .476 hitting percentage against Hi-Plains. She put down 11 of 21 attempts with just one error. Thompson added six kills followed by Walker and Coffin, each with three. Half a dozen Lady Bulldogs chipped in for blocks at the net, totaling six team blocks.
Bornhoft served 100 percent in the match including one ace. Thompson, who served 91.7 percent, registered seven aces from behind the service line.
On serve receive, Bornhoft led her team as the back row specialist with seven passes. Schram and Walker each tallied six. On defense, Bornhoft also led in digs with eight. Coffin added five and Goddard and Thompson each had three.
As a team, the Lady Bulldogs tallied 23 assists led by Thompson with 13 sets to her hitters.
On Monday afternoon, Haxtun took the road again, this time to Weldon Valley to take on the Lady Warriors. The Lady Bulldogs took set one, 25-21, but fell in a close set two, 25-27, before bouncing back for a third set win, 25-23. The Lady Warriors rallied to claim the fourth and send the contest to five sets but Haxtun dominated 15-6 to pick up the 1A win.
Individual stats for the Weldon Valley victory were not available as of press time.
Later this week, Haxtun will host Otis on Thursday, Oct. 21 for the annual Pink Out game. Proceeds from fundraisers at this year’s event will benefit the Haxtun Community Cancer Assistance Fund. Game time against Otis is set for 4 p.m.
On Saturday, the Lady Bulldogs will take their home court again as they host Wiley. The Wiley Lady Panthers are among the top five in 1A volleyball action along with the Lady Bulldogs. They currently hold a 13-1 record, the team’s lone loss to Briggsdale in late September. Game time on Saturday is slated for 11 a.m.
