And that's a wrap on the regular season. The Haxtun Bulldog baseball team finished the final week of regular play on a high note with wins over Briggsdale and Prairie last week.
The Bulldogs earned the third seed in the District 4 baseball tournament happening this week at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling. Haxtun holds an 8-6 overall record and are 7-5 in league play as the Bulldogs head into game one of District action Tuesday.
Last week the team traveled to take on Briggsdale in what was slated to be a double-header. The Bulldogs took game one, 19-8, over the Falcons and were ahead in game two, 6-4, before the contest was called due to rain.
Haxtun also took on Prairie for a varsity match up. The Bulldogs came out on top in that match, 17-2.
"I think we're going into Districts healthy overall and we all feel like we're a little over looked and have something to prove," Head Coach Trent Ham.
Merino took the number one seed in District 4 with a 14-1 record, giving the Rams a bye in the first round of playoff action. Caliche came in as number two and was set to take on Peetz, the seventh seed, on Tuesday afternoon in their first contest of District action.
Haxtun, who entered as number three, faced off with Prairie, the number six team, in a 12 p.m. game at NJC Tuesday. Results of that contest were not available as of press time.
Should the Bulldogs win over Prairie, as they did just last week by a 15-point margin, they will see the winner of Peetz and Caliche at 12 p.m. on Friday, June 11. The winner of that contest will move onto the championship match later on Friday afternoon. Others in the District 4 tournament include number four Otis and fifth seeded Briggsdale.
The overall winner of the single-elimination tournament this week will move onto Regional action next week. For a complete bracket, see page 8 in this week's issue of the Herald.
