For the first time in two years, the Haxtun Bulldogs stepped foot on the baseball field as the team kicked off the 2021 season. The team traveled to Holyoke for an afternoon double-header with the neighboring Dragons in their first contest since May 16, 2019; last year’s season was cancelled completely due to COVID-19.
In their first outing, Haxtun derailed the Dragons 20-1 and 11-0 to kick of the season with a 2-0 record.
The Bulldogs took a commanding 13-0 lead after the first inning in Holyoke last Tuesday afternoon. Haxtun added one run in the second, as did Holyoke, to hold onto a 14-1 advantage going into the third inning. The Bulldogs added six in the third while holding the Dragons scoreless to call the game at the bottom of the fourth. Haxtun took the win, 20-1.
Game two remained scoreless throughout the first inning. Early in the second, Haxtun struck first with one run while going on to add seven in the third for an 8-0 advantage. As the contest went on, the Bulldogs managed three additional runs in the sixth to seal the deal, 11-0.
On Saturday, Haxtun hosted their home-opener as the Wiggins Tigers came to town. Haxtun fell in game one, 9-2, and in game two, 14-2. Scores by inning were not available on Maxpreps as of press time; stats were also not available.
“Wiggins is a solid team that humbled us on Saturday,” Head Coach Trent Ham said. “We’ve got to play to our potential and excute with runnings in scoring position. We’re ready for a chance to bounce back against Yuma.”
The Bulldogs are set to take on Yuma at home on Thursday. First varsity pitch is slated for 2 p.m. followed by a junior varsity contest.
