Fleming tacks two wins onto perfect season; moves to 8-0 overall

The Fleming Lady Wildcats maintained their perfect season last week with wins over Sedgwick County and Briggsdale. The Lady Wildcats stood at 8-0 on the year as of Tuesday morning, April 13.

Fleming traveled to Ovid last Tuesday, April 6 where they faced off with the then undefeated Lady Cougars. Both teams entered the match at 6-0 on the season.

Sedgwick County put up a solid fight, falling by just five points in the first set and four in the second and third, but Fleming swept the match 3-0.

Senior setter Kendyl Kirkwood assisted the Lady Wildcat hitter with 20 sets at the net. She led the team from the back row in digs with 11 and at the net in blocks with three.

Junior Whitney Chintala added double digits at the net with 10 kills.She followed Kirkwood in digs, putting up 10 in that category as well.

Sophomore Kally Kirkwood led at the net in kills. She put 13 on the floor for the contest and followed her elder sister in blocks with two.

Freshman Madi Serrato and junior Sam Pope led from behind the service line. Serrato put over three aces with one error; Pope served two aces with one error.

On Friday night, April 9, the squad traveled to Briggsdale to take on the second ranked team in the North Central League. The Lady Falcons sit in the number two slot right behind the top-ranked Lady Wildcats. They entered Friday’s match at 5-2 on the year with losses to Platte Valley out of Kersey and University out of Greeley.

The two teams played a close first set with Fleming hitting the 25 mark first, 25-23. Briggsdale lost some steam in the second game and fell 25-14. They bounced back in the third for another close performance, but fell 25-22 to the Lady Wildcats who earned their second sweep of the week.

Kally Kirkwood led at the net with 21 kills against Briggsdale. She made just four hitting errors for the night. She also led the Lady Wildcat defense at the net with three blocks.

Chintala also added double digits at the net with 13 kills in the contest. From the back row, she put up 19 digs — the team high.

Kendyl Kirkwood made just one ball handling error at Briggsdale while assisting her hitters with 35 sets. She followed her sister at the net in blocks with one.

Serrato and Pope served 100 from behind the service line. Both players served over one ace. Sophomores Laney Schliesser and Maddy Harms also served one ace apiece.

Sophomore Lexi Schaefer led the Lady Wildcats in received serves. She put 25 serves into play with a single error.

On Tuesday, April 13, the Lady Wildcats hosted the Holyoke Lady Dragons. Holyoke entered at 4-3 out of 2A’s Lower Platte League. Watch next week’s edition of the Herald for results of that match.

Later this week, the Lady Wildcats are set to travel to Prairie and host Arickaree/Woodlin. Friday’s contest against the 0-6 Lady Mustangs is set to start at 6 p.m. Saturday’s play with the Arickaree/Woodlin Lady Indians, who enter the week at 1-6, is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
