Three wrestlers make podium at State

The 2021 wrestling season didn't end as three State competitors from the Sedgwick County/Fleming wrestling team hoped it would. Despite that, all three represented their team and communities well and should be proud of their accomplishments.

The lone competitor wrestling out of Fleming High School at the State Tournament, 152-pound junior Hayden Burr finished his season 20-5 and with a fourth place finish at the Colorado State Wrestling Tournament. Burr had a tough start and had to battle back on the consolation side of the bracket. He lost his quarterfinal match to James Brown of Peyton by fall before defeating Chris DeLuca of Buena Vista, 4-1, in his Consolations round one match which advanced him to the Consolation Semifinals. In that match, Burr defeated Cedaredge's Adrian Nieto, 3-1. This win put Hayden in for third and fourth where he once again met up with Peyton's James Brown.

Burr lost this match to Brown by fall ending his season with a fourth place finish. He plans to return next year and we are all anxious to watch him in his senior season.

Seniors Marco Martinez and Fabian Lopez also represented the SCF team at the State Wrestling Tournament. Martinez finished in sixth place in the 113-pound division and Lopez brought home third place in the 195-pound class.

The Coaches of these three young men and all their teammates who didn't get to wrestle this last weekend are very proud of all of them and the hard work they have put in despite the crazy year it has been. They will miss Martinez and Lopez next year but look forward to seeing what the rest of the team and the incoming freshman can do.
