Thomas Brooks

Thomas Keith Brooks, known as Tom by all, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, Jan. 29, 2021 following a tragic accident at the age of 58.

He was born, the youngest of four siblings, on July 31, 1962 in El Cajon, Calif., to Ivan Keith Brooks and Elaine (Darlene) Fetzer.

At the time of his death Tom was doing what he loved, working as an independent handyman in Haxtun.

Tom grew up in El Cajon and graduated from Granite Hills High in 1981. Tom started working in construction after high school. Growing up in southern California, Tom enjoyed time with family and friends at the coast, in the mountains and in the desert. His travels brought him to Colorado in the early 2000s where he continued to enjoy the outdoors. Tom and his dad also followed NASCAR racing.

Tom was a son, a brother, brother-in-law and uncle. He loved his family and was always happy to help them when they were in need of a babysitter, dog sitter, chauffer or just a helping hand. Tom did not make casual acquaintances, but life-long friends and cherished each and every one. Although he was always eager to help others, he was reluctant to ask for help himself. Tom was a gentle soul with a very giving heart and his giving continues after his death.

Tom is survived by his father Ivan Keith Brooks, Haxtun; sister Lynnette Berendes, Douglas, Wyo.; brothers John Brooks, El Cajon, and Ricky Brooks, Euless, Texas. Tom is also survived by his aunt Carol Scheel, Haxtun, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother Elaine.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 13, 1 p.m. at the Haxtun United Methodist Church.
