The Rev. David J. Morning, Haxtun and Holyoke priest, was instantly killed last Thursday night when his automobile collided with a truck on the Goodman hill, five and a half miles west of Fleming. Those who saw the car, a V-8 coach, said that it was the worst wreck they had ever witnessed. The priest had been in charge of the Catholic churches at Holyoke and Haxtun since April of this year, replacing the Rev. Father Kerr.

Haxtun's 10th Corn Festival and Crop Show was pronounced a success in every respect y the hundreds of people who gathered here Wednesday. Emil Koch was awarded first prize for the best 10 ears of yellow corn and Rex Meakins received first for the best single ear of yellow corn. The Holyoke High School band, directed by Earl W. Hormish, opened the afternoon entertainment. The races also provided good entertainment for two hours or more on main street. Fifteen hundred persons registered their names at the exhibit room for the drawing of a 100-pound sack of sugar, won by Mrs. Herman Carlson of south of town.

Oct. 25, 1950

Wilbur Riley received a medical discharge from the Army Air Force at an air base in Texas and returned to his home in Haxtun Friday.

The Methodists will lay the cornerstone for their new church building in Haxtun on Sunday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.

Death called Mrs. Guy G. Nelson, 65, early Wednesday morning. She had been in poor health for over a year.

Midway News - Richard Moon of Sterling was a visitor at the Joe Moon home Friday.

Oct. 23, 1975

Paoli News - Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. William Milholland were Mr. and Mrs. Tony Stegall of Denver.

Paoli News - Norval Pillard and sons of Detroit, Mich., spent some time with his parents, the Paul Pillards, and Ray during their elk hunting trip the past ten days in the mountains.

Mr. and Mrs. Dean Matthies of Sterling attended the football game in Haxtun Friday evening. Haxtun won over Revere. They were also visitors at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Darrold Gibbs, and enjoyed coffee before going to Burlington to visit his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Matthies.

Oct. 25, 1990

A recount of Haxtun citizens found an additional 70 persons over original census counts earlier this year. The town protested preliminary counts turned in for the 1990 census in September which showed a total population of 895. Town Clerk Jan Bjorklun used utility hookup counts to estimate that the count was off by 79 persons.

The Haxtun Bulldogs are set to meet Hilltop Baptist in the first round of state playoffs for eight-man football. The winner of the game will meet the winner of Wiggins versus Kiowa. The Bulldogs have an 8-0 season.

Fleming Lady Wildcats end league volleyball season in second place. Cheerleaders: Kim Wisdom, Jennifer Miles, Tina Martin, Mitzi Morris, Candice Mekelburg, Stacey Powell, Tara Brekel, Stacey Waterman and Kristen Bauder.

On Oct. 16, Greeley native Ken Hansberry was appointed by the Haxtun Town Board to fill the council seat left open when Bob Conklin resigned in September.

Two Haxtun high school graduates are among the approximately 140,000 students in the 23rd annual edition of the National Dean's List, 1999-2000. Haxtun students included in the publication are Paul Seger and Sara L. Wilson.

Coming off of one win and one loss this past week, Haxtun's Lady Bulldogs will enter the first game in volleyball district playoffs this Thursday in a three-way tie for second place. Earlier this past week the Lady Dogs swept past the Otis Lady Bulldogs in a two-game victory, 15-12, 15-6. As a team Haxtun served for 93 percent and received for 67 percent. Cinda Hill led the team's defensive effort scooping up 13 digs and seven blocks. Megan Lampman nailed the offensive effort with 15 total attacks on the ball with eight kills. Stephanie Harms contributed 11 attacks and four kills, and Hill added another 10 attacks with three kills.

Haxtun High School graduate Sandy (Ham) Fetzer is among five former Colorado State University student-athletes being inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame during ceremonies this week.

Seniors at Fleming Schools will have to abide by a new set of rules for the class trip this year. The Board of Education voted to change the guidelines for the trip during their October monthly meeting following input from the District's Accountability Committee, senior representatives, general students and school administration. According to the new guidelines, the senior class must first present preliminary plans to the principal prior to the January DOE meeting, which must include the designation, trip costs, dates, sponsorship plans and transportation requirements.
