Helen Haskins

Helen Potter Haskins passed away on Friday, June 19, 2020 at 2:12 p.m. at Acadia General Hospital in Crowley, La. at the age of 86.

Helen (Potter) Haskins was born in Fleming on Feb. 17, 1934 into a family of wheat farmers in the small town of Haxtun, making her 86 years old. She met her husband, Larry Haskins, when she was four years old and they married when she was 17. Eventually they made their way south to Marrero, La., a town on the west bank of New Orleans, where they raised their four daughters. The couple moved to Crowley in 1998 to establish a home for their retirement years.

In 2005 Helen was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease and had to adapt to the effects of this disease. On Sept. 11, 2009, she became a widow when Larry Lee Haskins, her husband of 58 years and best friend for 71 years passed away. She maintained their home in Crowley until September of 2012 when she fell and broke her back. She moved into Southwind Nursing Home the following December, began her rehabilitation, and called it home for the past eight years. She enjoyed making jewelry and putting together mini puzzles and took great joy in sharing them with others.

Her family will miss her presence but take comfort in knowing that she is resting in peace now.

Helen is survived by daughters Debra (Haskins) Wilson, Kentwood, La., Loretta (Haskins) Pieno, Marrero, La., Rebecca (Haskins) Herpin, Crowley, and Patricia (Haskins) Echeverria, Marrero; sister Patricia Potter Larson, Yuba City, Calif .; brothers Richard Potter and Royce Potter, Haxtun; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her husband; parents Roy Harlan and Rose O'Brien Potter; and brother Robert Potter.

A Mass of Christian burial was held on June 27 at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church. Father Mikel Polson, Pastor of Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, officiated the service. Helen's cremated remains will be buried in Haxtun at a later date.
