Cockroft and Goemmer honored as Rising Stars at Northeastern

Northeastern Junior College recently announced that Garrett Cockroft and Fallon Goemmer were selected as recipients of the Rising Star Award by the Colorado Community College System and the State Student Advisory Council.

The Rising Star Award is bestowed upon community college students who exhibit a high level of leadership and involvement in student activities, along with maintaining a 3.0 grade point average. Cockroft and Goemmer have both shown initiative both inside and outside of the classroom to make Northeastern a more positive and inviting campus.

Cockroft is a business student from Sterling and is a graduate of Fleming High School. He displayed outstanding leadership qualities as a concurrent enrollment student in high school. Those skills gave him the opportunities to be a peer leader and academic mentor for the Jump Start program, as well as a Student Success Seminar leader. Cockroft is very well regarded by his peers, faculty and staff, this has given him opportunities to grow his leadership skills as an Associated Student Government representative, a residence hall assistant, an ambassador and as part of the Mi Familia Club.

"There are very few leadership opportunities that Garrett has not taken advantage of and excelled at," representatives of the Council said.

Goemmer is an animal science and ag communications student from Willard, N.M. She is a founding member of the pre-vet club, is an active member of Phi Theta Kappa and Roundpen. She has taken on leadership roles to help coordinate campus canned food drives and Operation Christmas Child. Goemmer participates on multiple committees on campus, Student Senate, a RFP committee and the mascot committee.

"Since beginning her freshman year at NJC she has strived to help the community in any way and is always seen helping fellow students around campus. She is a lively personality that inspires everyone she meets ... she has quickly become an active member of the community and continues to show the virtues of a true leader and great friend," Council reps said.
