The Haxtun Harvest

Members of the Haxtun Senior Class enjoyed their annual "Sneak" Day last Thursday by visiting Sterling. Various places of interest were visited during the day and the holiday was reported to have been greatly enjoyed.

The Haxtun café changed hands last Saturday when the business was purchased from C. E. Windell by Wm. And Roy Albertshardt. The café had been operated by Mr. and Mrs. Windell since October when they purchased it from Kenneth Burt.

Another pioneer of the Fairfield and Haxtun community was called away last Thursday with the passing of Carl Anderson, 63, prominent and highly-respected farmer here for nearly 30 years. He came to America in 1904 and a short time later located on a homestead in Fairfield.

North County Line District News - (eight miles north and eight miles east of Haxtun); Mr. and Mrs. Gene Peterson called at the Art Lundberg home Friday morning.

Highland Center News - Our entire eighth grade, consisting of Dorothy Reyher, Aldine and Dean Schachterle, Robert Dawson and "Buss" Woods, passed their tests successfully. Our school closes next Friday with a picnic. Daniel Barkey, Donald Hill, Lorin Hovel, and Clara Wilterdink are Highland Center's addition to the Haxtun class this year.

After teaching since 1935, Gladys Bjorklun, Haxtun's fourth grade teacher, has decided to hang up the chalk, put away the red pens and retire. She received her teaching certificate in 1942. She taught in Fairfield in the sixth, seventh and eighth grade classes for five years. Then she moved to Haxtun where she taught fourth grade for five years.

On Friday, May 9, Scott Meakins participated in a collegiate trap shoot in Garden City, Kansas, as a member of the Garden City Community's College team. Meakins was third high individual at the shoot and received an Amateur Trapshooting Association belt buckle.

The Haxtun junior high heavy weight track team consisted of Carl Gamble, Roger Falk, Teddie Smith, Kent McDaniel, Tim Fetzer, Cory Allen, Tim Thompson, May Haynes and Jerry Lewis.

Michelle Spelts eighth grader, established a new league record in the 880 at Thursday's junior high league track meet.

Mitch Miller and Arlene Weers were selected as most valuable team members by the Haxtun boys and girls track teams following the 1980 track season.

Clarksville and Wages News - Lisa Lundgren hosted a slumber party Friday night to celebrate her birthday. Guests were DeAnn Reyher, Judy Hart, Linda Falk, and Andrea Fryrear.

Young people joining the Wages church on Sunday were LaRay and Hal Crossland, Cindy and Damon Struckmyer, Danine and Danny Schmidt, and Eric Sperber.

Paoli News - Mrs. Fred Kain, Mrs. Bill Kain, Mrs. Pat Smith and Kathleen attended the Golden Age Mother-daughter tea at the Zion Lutheran church in Holyoke on Wednesday.

Guests of the LeLand Miller home after Mitch and Mike's graduation were Mr. and Mrs. Larry Groshans, Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Val Sanger of Ovid, Mrs. Roth Landreth, Doug and Corby Hahn, Gerald and Peggy Miller and Melissa Miller who has just finished her school year at Colorado State University.

Milt Roeder, Yuma will be offered the position of half-time superintendent of schools at Haxtun. Haxtun Board of Education President, Dennis Holcomb announced the decision to offer Roeder the job at board meeting on May 18.

Fleming's 2000-2001 FBLA officers are Candice Wisdom, Historian and Webmaster, Becky Unrein, secretary/treasurer, Clay Unrein, vice president, Sarah Heaton, president and Kathy Anderson, reporter and student council representative.

Third graders Braden Anderson and Marshall Davis jam to air guitar during the Haxtun Elementary School Spring Concert on Monday, May 10. Braden is the son of Jared and Jonetta Anderson, Haxtun, and Marshall is the son of Marcie and Michael Davis, Haxtun.

Haxtun High School alumni Jackie Smith was recently recognized for several awards from Nebraska Wesley University. The 2006 graduate of HHS received the Huge Award for outstanding graduating senior history major.

Winners of the Haxtun Legion Auxiliary essay contest are Tristan Brown, Brenna Shafer, Hannah Marner, Josi Kurtzer, Bethany Gibbs, Karma Contreras, Megan Gerk andMason Edwards. They were presented with their awards by Auxiliary member Lennette Hutt.

The Sterling Mason's recently recognized Haxtun Junior High and High School students during an awards ceremony in Sterling. Those students receiving the awards, Allison Schaefer, MegAnn Hadeen, Rece Coffin, Taylor Andersen, Alan Michael, Greg Chapdelanie, Tessa Brammer and Hannah Conklin.
