The Haxtun Harvest

Miss Foy Kepler of Holyoke and Mr. Kenneth Hammond of Haxtun were married in Julesburg last Sunday afternoon by the Reverend Ira J. Bailes, pastor of the Christian Church of that city.

Miss Burdene Orel Anderson and William Olson, both of Haxtun, were quietly married at the Methodist parsonage in Julesburg Easter Sunday. The wedding was solemnized by the Reverend Mr. Dawson at 9:30 o'clock.

Word from Mrs. Gladys Snavely-Welch of Clifton, N. C., announces the arrival of a little daughter, Helen Ruth, on Sunday, April 4.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Brooks at a hospital in Haxtun April 23.

Midway News - Word was received Tuesday that Mrs. Joe Bivins had passed away at a hospital in Ovid Monday morning. She formerly lived in this community and is the mother of Mrs. Clara Elliott.

Bryant News - Mrs. Frank Freemyer entertained at a party Friday afternoon in honor of her sons Frankie and Jerry's birthdays, which are a few days apart. Those present were Mrs. Art Lewman and Irene and Raymond, Mrs. Claude Parks and Glennis, Mrs. Elmer Felderman and Keith, Mrs. Brune Adem, Millard Pope and sons, Kenneth and Dannie.

A Haxtun man escaped serious injury Monday evening when a semi-tractor trailer that he was driving collided with a Union Pacific train near Sedgwick. The accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. Dan Jay Dix, 26, Haxtun, was driving a tractor-trailer owned by Rothe Farms. The truck was filled with fertilizer. The impact popped out the windshield of the cab and threw Dan through the opening. He suffered scrapes and bruises and was taken to Sedgwick County Hospital in Julesburg.

Connie Watson, of Ovid, is the student teacher working with fourth and fifth grades in the Haxtun Schools this spring quarter. Ms. Watson will graduate from the University of Northern Colorado in June with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Early Childhood Education.

Elmer Hedges was honored for his 75th birthday on Sunday, April 20 at his Fleming farm home. Hosting the occasions were Fran Ehrlich and daughters, Leilani and Ladawna. Co-hosting was Alta Curtis.

Paoli News - Duane Harms and Steve Salvador took Heath Weiss, Eric Neiman, Brian and Kathleen Smith, Eric and Carl Gamble, and Kirk Alberts of Holyoke to Aurora on Saturday. They participated in a Daisy BB Gun shooting program sponsored by the Paoli Jaycees.

Fleming News - Fleming science students who had their exhibits entered at the state science fair include, JoAnn Atkins, Brenda Wertz, Tim Grauberger, Darla Langdon, Becky Dreier, Kirk Schepler, Bonnie Atkins and Wendy Barkley.

Mrs. Mitchell Davis gave a surprise birthday party Thursday morning honoring the birthday of Bonnie Lee Morris. Guest were served refreshments and sang the birthday to Bonnie. She was given gifts and birthday cards. The hostess, Mrs. Davis, presented Bonnie with a corsage upon arrival.

Clarkville and Wages News - Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Harding and family and Hazel Chapman attended the choral and Jr. High concert in Holyoke Monday night. Todd was a participant.

Mr. and Mrs. Ken Holcomb called on Mr. and Mrs. Robert Weed in Yuma on Saturday. Rick Holcomb attended the Lone Star Junior Senior Prom and banquet Saturday night.

The Holyoke Arts Council is presenting the David Taylor Dance Theater and "A Children's Rainforest Odyssey" on Friday, May 5, in the Holyoke High School Auditorium.

During the annual volunteer tea, hospital administrator Jim Brundige hands out gifts of gratitude to volunteers who have given time to the hospital. Those volunteering are Lois Kipp, Hazel Gall, Ann Olson, Ruby Heaston, Donna Harrell, Gerri Firme and Ethel Gourley.

The annual meeting of the Haxtun Rural Fire Protection District Board was held on March 10, at the Haxtun Inn. At that time, Roland Barkey submitted his resignation from the board. Tom Wilson, representing the board members, gave Roland a plaque for his 18 years of service and thanked him for his dedication and time spent helping the fire district. Haxtun Rural Fire Protection District Board members are Duane Harms, Tim Carper, Roland Barkey, Tim Fetzer, Barbara Meakins, Tom Wilson and Jay Wisdom.

State Representative Dianne Hoppe took time to visit with Colorado State University students Dan Firme and Casey Goddard both, Haxtun. The two met with Hoppe during the CSU Collegiate Farm Bureau tour to the state capitol on March 23.

The Haxtun-Fleming Herald

A new grain bin is being constructed on the west side of the Paoli Farmers Coop Elevator in Paoli. According to Steve Bahnsen, construction crews are using the jump form method to build the bin. He said the old way of the slip method used more men for construction and once started, construction could not stop.

Rick Unrein shows off his Denver Bronco memorabilia collection to Jaxon King, Levi Muller and Alex Vandenbark during the annual Fleming Library Collectors' Day on April 16. Over 200 people attended the event, featuring 10 different collections.
