Local credit union sponsors RISE UP challenge to benefit Help Haxtun fund; contest to run May 1-June 30

The Haxtun Community Federal Credit Union is asking community members to Rise Up! The local business is hosting a 14ers challenge to help community members be active while also showing support for other local businesses who have been hit as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Colorado is home to 58 mountain peaks exceeding 14,000 feet, also known as 14ers. This is the most of any other state in the United States. The HCFCU is hosting an event, May 1 through June 30, allowing residents to track miles walked or biked to climb any of Colorado’s 14ers.

Each 14er is listed by mountain ranges and is measured by miles from trailhead. That is the number of miles a person will need to run, walk or bike to “climb” the 14er. Participants can track steps with a smart watch or pedometer; each mile is 2,000 steps. Those who wish to bike can double the mileage for the conversion.

There will be two different categories for prizes including miles biked and miles walked/ran. The HCFCU will then award prizes for the following age groups: five through 12, 13-18, 19-34, 35-49 and 50 and up.

All local prizes will be purchased from local businesses including gift cards and merchandise. Additionally, participants also have the option to purchase t-shirts and all profits will benefit the Help Haxtun fund. Shirts are available for purchase, even if not participating in the 14ers challenge.
