The Haxtun Harvest

Fire destroys farm residence south of town: Heightened by a brisk wind, a blaze that began on the house roof brought complete destruction to the farm dwelling of Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Taylor, 11 miles south and three miles east of Haxtun Sunday afternoon. Owing to the dust, many people living within a short distance did not learn of the fire until after it was over.

Friends of LeRoy Miller will be glad to learn of his marriage to Miss Minnie Wells of Champaign, Ill. Announcement was made this week that the young couple were married on the evening of Dec. 27, 1934, at the home of the Rev. J. E. Aubry of LeRoy Ill., who performed the ceremony. Following the wedding, Mr. Miller returned to Haxtun in Jan. 8, while his bride remained at Champaign until Tuesday of this week in order be with her mother, who had been recovering from a fractured hip.

Virgil F. Suhl, 25, died following a serious illness, March 18, 1935. He leaves his wife, Dorothy M. Markt and daughter Mary Jane, ten months.

Fairfield News - During the father and son banquet last Friday evening, Mrs. Frank Bjorklun was hostess at an elegant dinner for the ladies. Mrs. Albert Anderson and three children, Mrs. A. C. Forell and children, Mrs. August Bjorklun of Haxtun and Mrs. Walter Eckman.

Lori Gibbs and Mary Salvador are the new owners of the Craft Patch (formerly Hobby Hut) and Haxtun Wards Agency. The crafts shop will stage its grand opening Saturday.

Two new emergency beepers for the Haxtun ambulance attendants have been purchased with some of the proceeds from the 1979 Fourth of July carnival in Haxtun. Steps and handrails, also funded by the carnival proceeds, will be put in front of the Post Office as soon as weather permits.

Beverly Wilson of Haxtun has been nominated to Who's Who Among Students in American Junior College for 1980-81. Wilson is a pre-pharmacy major at Northeastern Junior College.

Fleming News - Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Lambert observed their 40th wedding anniversary Sunday at the Fleming United Methodist Church.

Seven Fleming science students earned the right to participate in the State Science Fair in Englewood after showing their science exhibits at the 22nd annual Northeast Colorado Science Fair which was held in Sterling on March 8. Those who will attend the State Science Fair from Fleming are Wendy Barkley, Bonnie Atkin, Kirk Schepler, Darla Langdon, Brenda Wertz, Becky Dreier, Tim Grauberger, Paula Etl and Judy Loos. Alternates are Greg Etl and Darryl Morison.

Haxtun Lady Bulldog Tracksters for 2000 are Tennille Allen, Cinda Hill, Heather Lightsey, Mandy Lampman, Carly Firme, Ashley Yost, Kathleen Green, Jennifer Kamery, Megan Lampman, Stephanie Harms, Billi Jo Sweet, and Lacey Salyards.

Haxtun Bulldog Tracksters for the 2000 season are Colton Salyards, Travis Hovel, Ross Edwards, Casey Wolff, Brandon Krier, Randy Reed, Keith Shaw, Mike Ensminger, Greg Fetzer, Seth Starkebaum, Braden Ham, Jake Ehrlich, Chris Hill, Matt Everitt and Marlin Hinde.

Josh Ervasti, son of Rev. Tom and Carol Ervasti, canvasses the town in the early hours following a storm to shovel sidewalks for senior citizens. A Haxtun High School senior, Ervasti has chosen snow removal as his National Honor Society community service project.

Kristi Firme applies paint while restoring a 70-year-old barn located on her and husband Steve's farm north of Haxtun. The restoration project recently won the coupe the Colorado Barn Again Award. Steve and Kristi was the one who did most of the work. A photo of the restored barn was used or an original oil painting. The oil was presented to the Firme's and now hangs on a wall in their home.

The engagement of Kindra Hagemann, Yuma to Jeff Plumb, Haxtun, has been announced by the couples' parents, Mark and Melladee Hagemann, Yuma, and Philip and Michelle Plumb, Montrose. Kindra received a degree in agricultural journalism from Colorado State University. Jeff received a degree in agricultural education from Colorado State University. A June 10, 2000, wedding is planned by the couple.

Guys and Dolls square dancers who graduated in a ceremony held on Sunday, March 14 at the Haxtun Community Center, Daniel Larson, Heidi Larson, Josh Gregory, Dora Gregory, DeeAnn Christopher, Leslie Harms, Brent Harms, Jim Helfer, Bobbie Helfer, Stacy Deering and Jessica Deering.

Two Haxtun Bulldogs were honored as All-Conference players for the 2009-10 basketball season. Athletes are chosen for the honor by vote of league coaches. Haxtun senior Doug Carper received All-Conference honors. Lady Bulldog Macey Pierce, a junior, received All-Conference, Honorable Mention.

Four Fleming student-athletes were recently named to the list of All-Conference players for the 2009-2010 basketball season. Juniors Jenna Vandenbark and Arika Muller and sophomore Morgan Wilkening received the honor for their contribution to the Fleming Lad Wildcats team that took the consolation championship at the 1A State Tournament in February. Freshman Tyler Vandenbark was named to the All-Conference list for his achievements this season. Senior Austin Vandenbark and freshman Luke Lingreen received All-Conference Honorable Mention.
