The Haxtun Harvest

Miss Eleanor L. Sand, senior at the state teachers' college at Greeley was recently initiated in the Phil Alpha theta honorary history fraternity. Miss Sand was one of three new members to be initiated.

Miss Effie McIntyre, daughter of Mrs. Pearl McIntyre of Dailey, and Dale Kennedy of Fleming, were married on Sunday, March 3, in the parsonage of the Grace Methodist Church in that city. Following a short honeymoon in Denver, the young couple will return to make their home on a farm near Fleming.

Miss Lois Frances Gale and James Gibbs Rugg, both of Haxtun, were quietly married Monday afternoon at the Methodist parsonage in Sterling. The ceremony was performed at 4:30 o'clock by the Rev. H.L. Overdeer. Mr. and Mrs. Ruff left Monday evening for Raymond, Wash., where they expect to make their home.

New Haven News - George Rudel Jr. and Miss Mildred Probasco are spending a couple of days visiting friends in Seibert.

Highland Center News - The DesVoigns are taking a turn-about with the "flu." First Bill, then "Curly," and now Metz is in bed. Just so :Ma: doesn't take it, they think they will all soon be better.

Michelle Spelts and Susan Hadeen were named outstanding musicians at the Sterling Invitational Instrumental Music Festival Saturday. Miss Spelts, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pete Spelts of Haxtun, earned a trophy as outstanding saxophone player while Miss Hadeen daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rex Hadeen of Haxtun, was awarded a trophy as outstanding cornet player. Both are Haxtun eighth graders and students of band instructor Chris Hohweiler.

Renae Salvador and Lennie Fisbeck were crowned queen and king at the recent Haxtun High School Sweetheart Dance. Royalty and attendants included Arlene Weers, Scott Hinde, Gary Carper, Tammy Bjorklun and Lennie Fisbeck.

The Haxtun Co-op Oil company team placed first in Haxtun City League basketball this year. Members include Larry Wilson, Jeff Franson, Tim (Magic) Carper, Tom Wilson, Bryce Hill, Mike Gillotte, Kelly Hunt, Brian Biesemeier, and Art Nolin.

Paoli News - An open house was held at the Town Hall in Paoli on Friday evening in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Clark. A Social evening was enjoyed, cake and coffee was served.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Milholland visited with Mr. and Mrs. Marion Russell and girls on Sunday afternoon.

Lee's Auto Parts picked up second place trophy in Haxtun City League basketball this season. Members are, Larry McConnell, Dave Schaefer, Rob Dee, Mike Salyards, John Starkebaum, Tom Edwards, and Ken Harms. Flatland Sports' team was third.

On March 8, 2000, the Phillips County Sheriff's Office activated a search warrant in a residence in Phillips County just outside the city limits of Haxtun. The search uncovered a suspected methamphetamine lab plus large amounts of illegal substances. One individual was taken into custody with more arrests anticipated.

Gina Boerner, Zane Boerner, Derek Whittington, Christy Miller and Delissia Miller, taking part in one of the activities provided at Fleming Preschool's annual Community Fun Day held on Feb. 13. This year's theme was "Celebrate the New Millennium." Over 50 people filled the preschool for games, prizes and refreshments. Young children played bean bag toss and created fashion glasses. Bingo was available for adults. Those who helped with the day were Tammy Lousberg, Phylis Helgoth, Christy Miller, Clarissa Comstock, Rod and Regina Boerner, Lisa Chintala, Anthony and Terrie Serrato, Kathy Anderson, Ryan Einspahr and Darrin Hershfeldt.

Candidates for the Haxtun Hospital District Board and the Haxtun Town Council answered three questions for guests in attendance at a public forum on March 18. HHD candidates are Steve Hofmeister, Lyle McBride, Norris Harms and Dick Potter. Haxtun Town Council incumbents are Cloud and Laverne Starkebaum.

The Haxtun Lions' Club annual Chuckwagon dinner and show drew a crowd of over 500 people on Saturday night. Carl Wilcox, Lions' member said the Club sold around 92 trail box packets for the event, bringing in funds to support community service projects.

The Haxtun junior high girls' basketball team recently won the A-team tournament with wins over Sedgwick County and Holyoke. The win advanced the junior high team to the east/west championship with Caliche on Tuesday, March 9.

Fleming Lady Wildcats golfers for 2010 are Taylor King, Jena Monheiser, Kelli Monheiser, Amber Schlenz, Jenna Vandenbark and coached by Melissa Copeland.

Fleming Wildcat track team members for the 2010 season are, Nathan Frantz, Andrew Lightsey, Alex Haney, Jeff Allen, Aaron Delgado, Trevor Chintala, Ashley Atkin, coached by Lisa Chintala and Jarrod Boerner.

Winners of the annual Haxtun Conservation District poster contest are, Kyla Steinman, third place; Hannah Gibbs, second place; and Dalton Kuehn, first place.
