Strokes from Other Pens

Letter to the Editor

Letter to the Editor,

As the newcomer in the Town Council race, I have to try harder to get your vote April 7. This boomer did retire in Haxtun for its safe, affordable location, having paid higher taxes and helped out after the March 2017 wildfire.

The past three years I’ve participated in The Community Foundation of Northern Colorado, establishing a legacy fund for the hospital district. I’ve paid my dues with donations to BOCES, Samaritans Purse, Shield 616 police tactical gear and County Sheriffs of Colorado membership. I belong to the Gun Club and the Methodist Church, praise God. That’s community involvement.

I’m for more fiscal responsibility and less wasteful frivolous spending in town expenditures. I’m forfeiting the salary offered to volunteer my two Monday nights per month. I want more evident street maintenance, better plowing, thus reducing the un-sanded ice problem. New businesses purchasing existing drab downtown buildings can pay fair market price so sellers don’t get stiffed. Selective enforcement of ordinances needs to end — making it more fair, equitable and friendly for weeds, vehicles, farm equipment, structures and the barking dogs nuisance! I’d like better customer service with contractor help for the railroad crossings, swimming pool project, the electric grid and the tree mitigation for windstorms.

The children’s future must be a promise kept by protecting our farmers, the agriculture base, the water and the land.

I’m acquainted with Brandon, Lori and Mike with whom I want to listen, learn. Let the Mayor take the lead on our agenda. I want the opportunity to do something bigger than myself, to help the Town where I chose to live, find some direction and personal growth. Let’s keep our quality of life here!

Chris Daley,

Haxtun
