The Fleming Lady Wildcats completed their regular season last Tuesday, Feb. 18 with a home victory over the Peetz Lady Bulldogs. The win put the Lady Wildcats, who now move into District play, at 18-1 on the season.
Peetz came to Fleming last Tuesday for the second match-up between the two teams this season. Fleming owned the first contest on Peetz's home court, 69-22. The Lady Wildcats took this go-around as well; this time by a final score of 65-28.
The Lady Wildcats held a 31-6 advantage after the first quarter of play allowing some younger players to gain time on the court. The Lady Wildcat squad increased their lead by another six before the close of the half, bringing the score to 43-12.
The Lady Bulldogs outscored the home team by two in the third quarter, 14-12, in effort to close in on the scoring gap. The Lady Wildcats answered back with 10 points in the final quarter while holding Peetz to just two and the game ended with Fleming on top.
Junior Kendyl Kirkwood led the Lady Wildcats on the scoreboard with 12 points. She made six of seven of her two-point shot attempts. Sophomore Sam Pope followed with 10 points in the game. She went 100 percent from the free-throw line making two for two and scored the remaining eight on two-point shots.
Sophomore Jessie Bornhoft, along with starting players freshman Kally Kirkwood and sophomore Whitney Chintala, each tallied eight on the scoreboard.
Freshman Maddy Harms led in rebounds with nine. She brought down two offense and seven defensive boards. Bornhoft followed at one and six respectively for a total of seven rebounds.
The Lady Wildcats were scheduled to enter the District 4 Tournament on Tuesday, Feb. 25. They earned the second seed in the bracket behind the Briggsdale Lady Falcons.
Tuesday's round one action put Fleming up against the Caliche Lady Buffaloes. The two teams met in mid-December with the Lady Wildcats taking a 55-14 at Fleming.
A win in Tuesday's contest would put Fleming in a Thursday, Feb. 27 match up with the winner of a Longmont Christian versus Weldon Valley showdown.
The District 4 Championship is slated for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 29. All contests of the Tournament are set to be played at Northeastern Junior College in Sterling.
