  • Under the Wire

    Gary Hodgson|Nov 25, 2020

Well, here comes another holiday. That means an “Under The Wire” dedicated to the event. Not every holiday warrants a column as loyal readers have probably figured out now after 30 some years of doing this. Halloween doesn’t deserve a column as far as I am concerned. Never liked it as a kid. Probably because wearing weird clothes, a costume to most, complete with a mask I couldn’t see out of and hardly breath through, while walking down the barrow pit of our county road in the dark in late Oc...

  • Fearless Faith

    Ken Frantz|Nov 25, 2020

Separation is hard. Separation that distances – physically, mentally, spiritually – is worse. It is natural to seek answers for such stresses from the church, for it, of all institutions, should champion the value of community and the caretaking of one another. But, our record has not always been stellar in that regard. Examples of persecution under the Christian banner are not exactly new. My own denomination employed the practice of shunning in an earlier life, an incredibly destructive for...

Jerry Sonnenberg, Colorado Senate District 1|Nov 25, 2020

My Sunday morning was a picture-perfect day on the Colorado Plains: warm sun, hot coffee and my beautiful wife, Vonnie. Imagine my concern when the shocking tones of an emergency alert lit up my phone and shattered the peaceful morning. What could be so urgent, that my government had to send out these warnings to individual cell phones and interrupt morning routines like mine all across Colorado? A medical alert: this region is at severe risk from deadly COVID. Really?! I had no idea. The past nine months of watching friends and loved ones get...

Overuse of a crop leads to long term promotion of its pests and diseases. While disaster is frequently averted with breeding efforts and good IPM. A national scale failure of a crop is always a possibility. In the United States, the corn leaf blight epidemic of 1970 was a large-scale agricultural disaster. In Ireland a combination of potato blight, economic abuses of the British empire and overuse of a single crop led to the Great Famine. More recently much of Texas’ grain sorghum crop was destroyed by the sugarcane aphid. Alfalfa is easily the...
