It’s called reading between the lines. You know what I’m referring to. Someone says one thing, but means another. I don’t know about you but it bugs the heck out of me. If you’ve got something to say, darn it, just say it. I have always wondered why folks would go to such trouble. It always seemed easier to me to say the few words necessary to convey your thoughts than to spend much longer and many more words, beating around the bush. A few folks might have something to gain by not speakin...
It is a constant ever-present mantra these days that 2020 has been a particularly challenging year. Mental and physical trials of broad scope and impact are present in the lives of us all. Unease as to what each coming day has to offer is wearing. More and more, persons are intentionally opting out of daily routines that begin and end with world and national news. For some, it is a matter of mental health and personal well-being, a return to the safe harbors of pre-pandemic, pre-election,...
Dry weather damages even the most established perennials. The roots are what will be damaged. When do you water? And what perennials to cut back this fall and then next spring? Deeply watering your perennials before the ground freezes goes a long way to helping them through the initial transition into fall. After that pay attention to winter precipitation and if it gets dry and warm over an extended period find a way to give your perennials some water. Water when the air and soil temperature are above 40 degrees Fahrenheit. A little bit of...
We were preparing for school pictures last week and my middle child was adamant on having “rock and roll hair” for his. I tried and tried to talk him out of it, but he kept insisting that he has a mohawk for his picture. I showed him how I was going to do his brother's hair in a nice side part, and pulled out a new polo, hoping the brand-new shirt would sway him. As much as I hoped he would forget about the hair, he never did. He’s my wild child. Or a “strong-willed” child as some will deli...

The Phillips County highway project, to be carried out through the work-relief program, calls for the employment of 150 men. Deciding to quit farming in this...
