The United States Department of Agriculture has approved Genetically Modified Organism technology wheat for production in the US. The approved trait is HB 4, a drought tolerant transgenic gene found in sunflower. Along with drought tolerance, heat tolerance is also expected to accompany the trait. In addition, wheat varieties may also carry herbicide tolerance. Since the trait is transgenic and GMO, EPA along with FDA will also need to review the application. The annual meeting of the Haxtun High School Alumni was held on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Haxtun. The Fleming Wildcats traveled to the home of the Hi-Plains Patriots on Friday, Oct. 4 where they shut out the home team. The Wildcats put up 28 points in the opening quarter at Seibert and a scoreless second quarter left the tally at 28-0 at halftime. The Fleming Lady Wildcats have worked their way into the top two in the Colorado High School Activities Association's weekly rankings. The local squad swept Otis and High Plains last week to move up two spots from number four to number two behind the Merino Lady Rams in 1A action. Patrick "LeRoy" Lousberg passed away Sept. 16, 2024 at the Haxtun Nursing Home. LeRoy was born Aug. 13, 1939 in a home birth in the St. Peter's area. His parents were Aloys and Elizabeth Lousberg. LeRoy was the youngest of four boys: Duane, Deryle, Dean and LeRoy. He attended St. Peter's Catholic School until eighth grade and then went to Fleming High School where he graduated in 1957. On Sept. 5, 1959, LeRoy married Joanine Lock. LeRoy and Joanine were married 61 years and had seven children... Full story
