  • Strokes from other pens

    Renee Phillips, Haxtun|Jul 1, 2020

Letter to the Editor, I believe that Haxtun is a community built on love, so it troubles me that there's a Confederate flag in the window of a store on main street. Change is happening all over the country and I think it should happen here, too. The kids who grow up here shouldn't have to see a symbol of hate every time they go down main street. And if we want visitors to Haxtun to know who we are and what we stand for, we should, as a community, unite in love and ask that the flag be taken down. If the rest of our country can do it, so can...

  • Legslative session closes; 67 bills introduced in final 3 weeks

    Marianne Goodland, Legislative reporter|Jul 1, 2020

The 2020 legislature session that ended on June 15 was unlike any other and not in a good way. In the session’s final three weeks, 67 bills were introduced in the House and 20 in the Senate. The House’s list included 42 bills tied to the 2020-21 budget plus the School Finance Act. That meant a lot of rushing and it did not sit well with State Senator Jerry Sonnenberg, Sterling. He pointed out that one measure was introduced at 7:45 p.m. one evening, was through its only committee hearing by 8:15 p.m. and with a preliminary vote by 8:30 p.m...

  • Under the Wire

    Gary Hodgson|Jul 1, 2020

When I was eight years old, the favorite game neighbor kids, my sister and I use to play was “Cowboys and Indians.” Because I had black hair and mostly because I was younger than everyone except my sister who refused to run around without a shirt on, I usually was assigned the role of Indian. I really didn’t mind. I thought Indians were pretty cool, even though my only contact with them was old Gary Cooper and John Wayne movies. Indians got to do all the things I was good at. According to stere...

  • Fearless Faith

    Ken Frantz|Jul 1, 2020

Set aside grandstanding, bickering, politicizing and anger. Send them packing in short order along with impatience, intolerance, ungratefulness and wont. Unguarded emotions and irritable conversations are also not welcome for a time. Reclaim ownership of your life from the media noise and hype. This is not a call to reject personal belief in favor of anything or anyone. Most of us will not change our minds or positions on most issues anyway. We should at least heed a call to respect others e...
