What seemed like a normal, late-afternoon four-wheeler ride turned tragic for local resident John Everitt last Monday. Everitt, who was riding from his home southeast of Haxtun just up the road to the shop for dog food, rolled the ATV and was airlifted from the accident site to Northern Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. Twelve of the 13 measures he sponsored headed to the Governor’s desk, his best year ever. He went six-for-six in House bills he sponsored and six-for-seven in Senate bills he sponsored. • Under the Wire

    Gary Hodgson|Jun 30, 2021

You can take the boy out of the country but ... you can’t teach him how to drive in the big city. It seemed like a simple task. All I had to do was attend a meeting in lower downtown Denver. LoDo, they call the area. Before this project was over, I’d re-named it. Over the phone the directions seemed easy enough. I-25 south to Speer, Speer to 15th, left on 15th, etc., etc. It couldn’t be any harder than directions in our town. You know, left at the grain elevator, go down the street to where the...

  • Fearless Faith

    Ken Frantz|Jun 30, 2021

Dogs and trucks were made for each other. Some dogs ride in them, others want to chase them. Whatever joy is derived on behalf of the dog, however, is genuine and without artifice. When they ride, they ride with windows down, noses up, and a look in their eye that says life just doesn’t get any better than in this particular moment. When they chase, ill-advised as that is, it is all out, winner take all. There is a lot to be said for living in the moment. The same can apply to daily living as w...

  • Son Up to Son Down

    Audree Edwards|Jun 30, 2021

Wheat harvest is rapidly approaching and I often get sentimental this time of year. There’s something magical about it. The sights, the sounds, the smells, the rush of adrenaline when equipment starts heading to the fields. I love the way the wheat dust settles in with the sunset, the roar of the grain elevator heard from a distance and the lights of the combine turning on like lighthouses on the shore. It’s a fast-paced, busy, non-stop ride that we somehow look forward to with both exc...

Kit Carson's Stephanie Framel led area finishers in 3A, posting a two-day total of 177, good for 15th...
