House Bill 20-1349, also known as The Colorado Option, has passed the House of Representatives and is now in the Senate. Haxtun Hospital Chief Executive Officer Dewane Pace updated members of the Board of Directors on the house bill during a meeting in late May. According to Pace, during the committee phase in the Senate, bill amendments can take place. “We are watching carefully as the first change that has been proposed would remove all healthcare providers from being required to participate, except for hospitals,” Pace said. “This means...
The Haxtun Swimming Pool project marches on; to date the committee tasked with raising funds to construct a new swimming pool in Haxtun reports a total of $358,000 so far. “The committee is encouraged by donation progress over the past six months,” Committee Member Lee Salyards said in a recent update. The goal, Salyards said, is to locally raise $750,000. “We’ve seen so many local businesses and individuals step up and give, which gets the project closer to its goal.” The goal figure is one provided by a grant writer who has experienc...

JUST SEVERAL WEEKS shy of the one year anniversary of a severe June thunderstorm that caused mass destruction throughout town, new welcome signs went up on the east and west ends of Haxtun. The early June storm last year tore down numerous trees, ripped through small structures and damaged the old welcome signs. With help from Points West Community Bank, the Town of Haxtun partnered with IWS in Sterling to construct and install new welcome signs on both ends of Highway 6. Pictured above are...
This is the final week of the 2021 legislative session; by law, legislatures must adjourn by Saturday, June 12, although they are not expected to go much beyond Wednesday, June 9. It’s been a busy week, with more than 200 bills still awaiting final resolution as of June 1. What’s been completed in the final full week includes Senate Bill 116, which reached its final resolution on June 3, when House Democrats approved the bill on a 40-24 vote and the Senate concurred with amendments added by the House Education Committee back on May 20. The bil...

Today’s column is written for male readers only. Sorry ladies. Today you’ll just have to flip the pages to the classifieds or somewhere else. The subject matter I intend to deal with in the next few paragraphs is just ... well, let’s say, it’s too sensitive to us guys for you to see. OK, men, now that the women are all gone, I’ll explain the secrecy. It’s not that females wouldn’t have understood. In fact, it’s the opposite. They would probably understand. Even worse, they would agree with me....
Seemingly overnight our irises are back in full force after being shredded a year ago by storms. It’s a reminder of the resilience of nature and God’s divine touch on creation. It’s not only surprising that they recovered, but that everything we planted came back. Bearded or beardless, dwarf or full blown, all are hardy inhabitants of gardens that are eagerly blooming. We’ve tried to keep up with all the names of the current plantings but after a while, an absence of plant marker stakes doomed...

Our area received above average rainfall in May which changed a once parched wheat crop into one with great potential. According to the Colorado Mesonet, May rainfall in our area ranged from 2.2 inches at the Burlington south weather station to 4.4 at the Akron weather station. Every producer I have spoken with over the last couple of weeks is planning to apply or has already applied a fungicide to prevent an outbreak of wheat stripe rust given the conditions that it thrives. An extension top dress nitrogen experiment is showing a large...
Letter to the Editor, My letter addresses several different angles about Memorial Day. I was a little disappointed that there wasn’t a service for the day this year. But this statement comes with some reservations. Our local Veterans have provided us with this service for years and many of them have done it for decades. If you have attended this event over the years it has fallen on a few to provide this for the community and many of them are not able to continue this tradition for their own health reasons. For me, this yearly service takes o...
