Monday, May 4 is the day offices could reopen for up to 50 percent of their workforce, according to the Safer at Home order issued by Governor Jared Polis a week prior. It’s also the day that budget writers for the Colorado General Assembly got to work to figure out how to cut $2 billion to $3 billion out of the 2020-21 State budget. At $3 billion, that’s just under 10 percent of the total budget, but that includes federal funds, which make up just under one-third. And that’s in addition to the order Polis gave on April 30 to cut $228.7 milli...
It is completely impossible to write a humorous column addressing the COVID-19 pandemic. Humor aside for a bit, there are some surprising developments to all this. A big surprise to many of us is the hoarding issue. Folks rushing to the grocery store to stock up on the essentials of life. Gone from the shelves are canned goods, flour and the hardest to come by of all, toilet paper. Granted, nobody wants to run out of it. However, this is when I see a big upside for Agriculture. As a small boy,...
There is no trophy like a dog trophy. Never a mere participation award, dog trophies are earned by finding something rank and dragging it back home or bringing other small critters dead or alive to the back step until the vanquisher is praised to no end. At great risk of compromising my age, I believe our dogs are far and above the Lassie variety that some of us remember rescuing little Timmy from the bottom of a well. Instead, they earn their commendations and keep by assuring us that they...
June gardening tasks The month all gardeners have been waiting for is upon us. Now that nighttime temperatures are above 50 degrees Fahrenheit and staying consistently into the mid-50s, we can plant many more plants in our gardens. It is safe to plant out the geraniums, petunias and any other annual you want to use in your landscape. If you prefer to start some things from seed, now is the time to plant out California poppy seed, morning glory, four o’clock and many more. It is time to start acclimating those indoor plants by moving them o...
