The April 24 meeting opened with an invocation from Chief Community Relations Officer Julia Biesemeier and approval of the agenda. • Significant valuation increases expected for county property owners

    Doug Kamery, PC Assessor|May 3, 2023

Property owners in Colorado can expect tremendous valuation increases when they receive their 2023 Notice of Valuation on or about May 1, including Phillips County. If you have not been following the local real estate market, it might be a shocking number. Over the past two years, a strong demand for real estate, increased building material costs, historically low mortgage rates, a steady migration from larger cities into Eastern Colorado and families upgrading to larger homes, have all contributed to these historic valuation increases. We...

  • 200+ bills face lawmakers as days of General Assembly wind down

    Marianne Goodland, Legislative reporter|May 3, 2023

The Colorado General Assembly is in its final days of the 2023 session, with adjournment to take place no later than midnight, Monday, May 8. Lawmakers have at least 200 bills to complete in the final week, including the Governor’s housing plan as contained in Senate Bill 213. The bill was gutted last week to remove most, but not all, of its language that stripped local governments’ control on zoning and other housing issues and ceding it to the State. As it exists this week, the measure now has to head over to the House, where progressive Dem...

  • Fearless Faith

    Ken Frantz|May 3, 2023

When judging the success of churches, there continues to be a tendency to fall back on numbers. Attendees, members, baptisms, baby dedications, weddings and souls declared and delivered for Christ are all indicators of the value of the work that is being done. The more the merrier. Reality, however, sheds a different light on the work we think has been done. A glance backward in my own Western Plains district (comprised of Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and northern New Mexico) provides interesting...

  • Under the Wire

    Gary Hodgson|May 3, 2023

When cell phones hit the world, Sue and I were among the first to buy in. At the time we were living pretty complicated lives. All at the same time, we were traveling down the rodeo road and producing our new radio programs, all the while trying to keep track of four kids, too old to want to tag along with us and too young to trust all the decisions they might be making in our absence. Being able to travel with a phone you could use from anywhere was great. Not sure the kids would agree. Proof...

    Candie Fix, Managing Editor|May 3, 2023

Tuesday morning started out like any other at Fleming High School; students filed in to their classrooms, slowly found their seats and teachers began the day's lessons. It was like any other day ... until the Grim Reaper entered a classroom, tapped its first victim on the shoulder and removed a student from class. The exit followed with a reading of the students obituary and from then on, it was no longer just a normal day. A partnership with the Colorado State Patrol and the Logan County Sherif...
