Governor Jared Polis said in a news conference last week that the current COVID-19 dial will expire on April 16. Marianne Goodland, Legislative Reporter|Apr 14, 2021

The 2021-22 State budget, as contained in Senate Bill 205, is on its way through the General Assembly. The State Senate last week had its first crack at the $34.1 billion budget, up by about $4 billion from the current year’s spending. Much of that extra money is in one-time funds left over from the 2019 tax year, due to higher-than expected income tax revenues. The Joint Budget Committee, the six-member group that annually crafts the budget, also cut $3.4 billion in general funds from the 2020-21 budget and that turned out to be more than w...

  • Under the Wire

    Gary Hodgson|Apr 14, 2021

She was willing and available. She was my best friend’s wife, but I needed her. Heck, at that point, I needed anybody! We were going to pour cement for a new pasture stock tank and help wasn’t exactly lining up at my door. (Well what did you think I was talking about, anyway?) My friend was absolutely the best help a person could have. But even with his talents and strong back this was going to be a challenge. When his wife offered to help, I was skeptical. Sue, my wife, was going to help. She...

  • Fearless Faith

    Ken Frantz|Apr 14, 2021

The office desk I use isn’t exactly modern art. It stems from the 40s or 50s, a hand-me-down that has served well but will never win a beauty contest. It was made during the era of everything veneer, and while it no doubt was unspoiled when new, it has become something less than striking from a visual standpoint. The oak veneer has chipped and taken damage on most outside corners and the drawers require wrestling moves to open them on occasion. It’s most redeeming characteristic was summed up...

    Candie Fix, Managing Editor|Apr 14, 2021

Despite a rough week of volleyball action, the Lady Bulldogs are determined to reset and finish the regular season strong. Haxtun took on Otis, Wiggins and Merino, all on the road last week, suffering 3-1 set losses in all three matches. “It was a tough week for our varsity,” Head Coach Paige Thompson said. “We did not play solid volleyball and we are going to have to put quality sets together to finish out the next two weeks.
