Board members approved refinancing a loan taken out for upgrades to the HVAC system. Refinancing is expected to save the district over $20,000. February brings changes to the Haxtun Chamber of Commerce as former Director Jenn Oberle leaves her position and Interim Director Kelcie Yockey steps in. Oberle, who served as director for three years, resigned from her position as she and her family plan to relocate to Hawaii. Haxtun Health welcomed a new member to the Board of Directors. Rebecca Ensminger took an oath of office to serve on the local hospital district board in a meeting in late January. Ensminger’s addition fills the one vacant position on the board, bringing the board to full membership. Wheat stem sawfly is a native insect that feeds on grasses in Colorado. The insect was first identified by entomologists in Colorado around the late 1800s and primarily fed on range grasses. However, wheat stem sawfly emerged as a Colorado wheat pest in 2010 and damage from this insect has been expanding and increasing since. For the second time this season the Haxtun Lady Bulldogs picked up a win over the Caliche Lady Buffaloes. This time, Haxtun earned the win on the road at the home of the Lady Buffs. Beverly Ann (Cranwell) Struckmeyer passed away Jan. 21, 2022 after a lengthy battle with illness. Bev was born Nov. 9, 1944 in Imperial, Neb. She was the third child of Kenny and Margie Covert Cranwell. She was raised a half mile north of Lamar, Neb., and lived beside the Miner family, who were lifelong friends. Bev attended school in Lamar, Imperial and in Holyoke for one year, graduating from Imperial High School. While attending high school in Holyoke, she met the love of her life, Lee Struck...
Tsugio Yoshimoto passed away Jan. 26, 2022 at the Sedgwick County Nursing Home in Julesburg at the age of 97. Tugo was born June 16, 1924, at Sedgwick to Hideichi and Hide (Toyota) Yoshimoto. He graduated from Ovid High School. Tugo’s family farmed north of Sedgwick for many years. He was one of the last farmers in the county to employ a team of horses for his farming operations. He was proud of his farm and was honored when his beet crop was named one of the “High Ten” for Great Western Sugar. In 1949, Tugo married Elsie Sato at the Sedgw...
