  • Planning for the 2021 growing & grazing season

    From Retta Brugger, Julie Elliott|Jan 27, 2021

How can you make well-informed decisions for summer grazing? We all know that 2020 was a drought year in Colorado. Soils are dry and will need to be refilled. When do we need the moisture for summer grass? How can we plan for the 2021 grazing season? Cooperative Extension research across the High Plains found that cumulative precipitation up to 30 days before peak grass growth has the most impact. For Eastern Colorado, peak grass growth is in June and July. That means the moisture received to mid-June sets the stage for summer grass growth....

  • Under the Wire

    Gary Hodgson|Jan 27, 2021

OK, so what do you do when you can’t write about anything you think is funny because it might offend someone? It’s particularly hard to do if your goal is to entertain, not offend anyone. I must admit I haven’t been particularly fond of 2020. Oh, we had a great calf crop, just barely enough moisture to keep us in grass until fall and hit a pretty good market with our calves. That part of this past year was pretty good. The trouble is, those 46 words you just read is about all the good thing...

  • Fearless Faith

    Ken Frantz|Jan 27, 2021

How often have we heard people suggest that someone we know is just going through a phase? It is usually employed as a pejorative term, a not-so-subtle critique followed by an expression of hope that behaviors will return to an acceptable norm. Some, for example, view the terrible twos as a phase that young children (and their families) inevitably experience. Older school children are also subject to scrutiny in that regard as they frequently hear about each phase that they characterize in the...

Normal weight obesity is when a person has a normal weight for their height (BMI between 18.5 – 24.9), but their body fat percentage is above normal (+32 percent for women and +26 percent for men). It is likely that up to 30 percent of people could be considered normal weight obese. Although everyone likes to think that fat is the bad guy, you do need fat to survive. Fat has a purpose, but when you have too much, it can hurt your health. Why fat is important: • It regulates hormones and bod...

Season B is officially here and even though it brings with it mask requirements and spectator restrictions, it is generally being welcomed with open arms. For many area youth, it will be the first competitive action they have seen in more than 10 months. After a week of practice, competitions were scheduled to begin this most recent Monday and a lot of eyes will be on the mats, seeing if Wray can add yet another state title to its trophy case. The Eagles open the season as the #1 team in Class...
